Over the past decade we've seen a major shift in our roles as creator or consumer. Many more of us are now on team consumers, and especially in the tech world, this gap will only widen.
I think, fear, and hope that the shift in balance will be a little too dramatic to actually catch on.
Team one, the content consumers, have become dopamine junkies with the dawn of smart phones and content based mobile apps. Our dopamine fix has become easier and easier to get as technology has evolved. Where we used to play soccer and chase the feeling we get when we'd score a goal, we now endlessly scroll for seemingly no reason.
On the other side of this equation is the content production team. They're in it for the dopamine fix as well, but through the boost they get from hitting 10,000 likes every post. There's only one way to keep the dopamine flowing and that's to keep evolving, to keep finding new ways to engage with your audience or to find that right content that scratches your itch.
Now imagine going one step further. The technology used to consume and create this content is also evolving. Soon we'll have AI generated movies available to us from Hollywood on a new brain-computer interface that Elon Musk makes.
Think about that, the implication! Eventually we'll just have the option for a "dopamine pump." Something that gives us the constant perception of pleasure - until we croak.
